How Does CBD Work Topically?
The human body contains an endocannabinoid system which is involved in “a host of homeostatic and physiologic functions, including modulation of pain and inflammation,” according to the article "The Endocannabinoid System, Cannabinoids, and Pain,” posted on the National Institutes of Health's website.
CBD is an endocannabinoid that binds to cannabinoid receptors within the central nervous system. The endocannabinoid system has receptors such as CB1 and CB2 and are in every organ including the skin. The endocannabinoid system modulates inflammation and pain in part because inflammation may also cause pain.
CBD binds to a TRPV1 receptor, which in turn has a positive influence on the CB1 and CB2 receptors, which a second way CBD indirectly mitigates pain, as discussed in Cannabis & Chronic Pain Management and other sources.
